What is Truth?

Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” John 18:37

Pilate asked another question in John 18:38.

What is truth?

If Pilate only waited long enough to get the answer, but he was convinced there wasn’t one. He didn’t know truth was staring him right in the face. If only the question was genuine and Pilate stayed.

Jesus would have answered with…

  • I came into this world to enlighten every man. John 1:9
  • I came into this world as a revelation of truth. John 1:14
  • I came so grace and truth is realized through Me. John 1:17
  • I am the way, and the truth, and the life. John 14:6
  • I came as the truth and knowing me, man has eternal life. John 17:3

Truth (from a = privative… + lanthano = to conceal) is out in the open, but wicked men, so to speak, put it in a box and sit on the lid and “hold it down in unrighteousness.” Their evil deeds conceal the open truth of God from men.

In the Old Testament the Hebrew, emeṯh, translated truth, is related to the verb ˒āman “support, sustain, establish,” to the noun ˒emûnâ “firmness, faithfulness,” and to ˒āmen, truly, The transliteration of Hebrew ˒āmen is where we get the Greek word amḗn! And why I shout Amen!

God is referred to as the God of truth Isaiah. 65:16, Psalm 31:5. And God’s truth reaches to the sky Psalm 108:4, forever settled in heaven Psalm 119:89.

When Jesus prayed for His disciples and us in John 17 in His High Priestly Prayer He said “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. John 17:17.

Jesus is asking God the Father to separate His disciples from this world by truth. So the way to do this is by truth and the source of truth is God’s Word.

Truth isn’t just something we believe, we must speak it and practice it. Paul said in Ephesians 4:15, but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, Paul is not telling us to withhold truth to be loving, but speaking the truth in love.

We as believers should, but not limited to…

  • worship God in Truth John 4:24
  • call upon Him in truth Psalm 145:18
  • stand firm in truth Ephesians 6:14
  • walk in the truth 3 John 3-4
  • we should accurately handle truth 2 Timothy 2:15
  • the church is the pillar of truth 1 Timothy 3:15
  • preach the word in truth 2 Timothy 4:1-4

We must also defend truth Jude 3-5.

Here is the great evangelical disaster – the failure of the evangelical world to stand for truth as truth. There is only one word for this – accommodation: the evangelical church has accommodated to the world spirit of the age… Truth carries with it confrontation. Truth demands confrontation: loving confrontation, but confrontation nevertheless. If our reflex action is always accommodation regardless of the centrality of the truth involved, there is something wrong!

Francis Schaeffer

Paul asks a question in Galatians 4:16, So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth? Paul was telling the Galatians, I told you the truth not to harm you, but that you would find great joy and peace.

But sometimes truth divides! By it’s own definition truth is the opposite of falsehood. It’s clear in Scripture that nothing divides like Jesus.

Just ask Pilate!

Martin Luther said…

Peace if possible, but the truth at any rate.

Jesus said “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”

...and that’s a beautiful thing!
