What is Peace?

It depends on what kind of peace you’re talking about, world peace, inner peace or peace with man. Then you have the Old Testament peace shalom.

How about. if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility,” kind of peace?

What peace are we talking about here?

I would like to talk about peace with God.

Houston, we have a problem!

Men can’t find peace on their own, they run away from peace and love conflict.

Paul, in Romans 3, quotes Isaiah 59… “AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.” In Romans 3:17, Paul continues his detailed description of the unregenerate man, while continuing to find him guilty before God.

Paul says in Romans 3:15- 17

“THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN.”

Romans 3:15- 17

Just like in Isaiah 59:7 Their feet run to evil, And they hasten to shed innocent blood; Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity, Devastation and destruction are in their highway.

And God says there is no peace for the wicked Isaiah 57:21.

Paul then summarizes this all up with

“THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

Romans 3:18
-

Calvin said…

“Peace with God is opposed to the dead security of the flesh, and for this reason, — because the first thing is, that every one should become awakened as to the account he must render of his life; and no one can stand boldly before God”

John Calvin

All unregenerate (unbelieving) people are at war with God and run away from God because “THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”

Let me get this right!

Man doesn’t want peace, he doesn’t know peace, he only wants war, he loves iniquity and evil and there is no fear of God in him.

We are all doomed!

And that’s exactly where Paul wanted us, lost in our sin!

But God!

God is the answer, He’s the answer for everything! Salvation is from the LORD! Jonah 2:9. God is the only One that can make a lost spiritually dead person come alive to have this peace.

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2 in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. 3 Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. 4 (But God), being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved).

Ephesians 2:1-5 [Emphasis Mine]

Dead is an interesting word in the original Greek language. So often in the Greek there are many nuances and meanings for a word, depending on the context. But not for the word dead, (nek-ro’-o) (nekroo from nekros = dead, not alive!

Ask yourselves this question… What can a dead man do?

Mark this….

(But God), being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead (spiritually dead) in our transgressions (sin), made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved). Ephesians 2:4-5 [Emphasis Mine]

We have peace with God when He makes us alive when we’re dead, spiritually dead! Romans 5:1 says Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, It is through Christ’s work of justification that we can have peace with God.

  • God the Father is called the God of peace in Hebrews 13:20
  • God the Son, is called the Prince of peace in Isaiah 9:6
  • God the Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of peace in Ephesians 4:3

So, now lets finish looking at Ephesians 2…we all like to quote these verses, but now read it in context with Ephesians 2:1-5…..

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Ephesian 2:8-9 [Emphasis Mine]

The Apostle Paul had a peace plan, too. For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified 1 Corinthians 2:2…

The gospel of Jesus Christ is the peace plan, Jesus came on to the scene in Mark 1:15 to start His Galilean ministry and said “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

If you don’t have this peace, this peace with God. Call on Him now, and believe, for “WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED.” Romans 10:13.

Jesus is the peace plan!

Jesus said “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. John 14:27. Jesus goes on to say “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Paul would go on to say in Titus 3….

He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:5-7 [Emphasis Mine]

...and hope never disappoints! Romans 5:5 goes on… And the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us

Peace with God!

…and that’s a beautiful thing!
