Christians have asked this question for two thousand years, and the honest answer remains the same: no one knows the exact day or hour. Jesus Himself said in Matthew 24:36, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” What we do know is that Scripture gives us clear signs to watch for, a posture to take while we wait, and a call to live with readiness and purpose.
The question matters because it shapes how we live today, not just what we believe about tomorrow.
When Will Jesus Come Back?
Jesus will return at a time known only to God the Father, but Scripture teaches that His coming will be sudden, visible, and unmistakable. Believers are called to watch for the signs of His return while living faithfully in the present, because readiness is not about predicting the date but about staying spiritually awake.
What Jesus Said About His Return
Jesus spoke more about His second coming than almost any other topic during His earthly ministry. He warned against date-setting and speculation, yet He also urged His followers to recognize the season.
In Matthew 24:42-44, Jesus said, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come… So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” He paired mystery with urgency.
He compared His return to a thief in the night, to lightning flashing across the sky, and to a master coming home unexpectedly. Each image carries the same weight: His return will be sudden, and only the watchful will be ready.
The Certainty of His Coming
While the timing remains hidden, the reality of Christ’s return is one of the most repeated promises in the New Testament. Acts 1:11 records the angels telling the disciples, “This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”
This is not symbolic language or wishful thinking. Jesus is coming back bodily, visibly, and gloriously.
What Are the Signs of His Return?
Jesus didn’t leave us in total darkness about the conditions surrounding His return. He gave His disciples a series of signs to watch for, not so they could set dates, but so they could discern the times.
The Signs Jesus Described
In Matthew 24, often called the Olivet Discourse, Jesus outlined a series of events that would mark the lead-up to His return. These include wars and rumors of wars, famines, earthquakes, persecution of believers, false prophets, and the spread of the gospel to all nations.
Matthew 24:14 says, “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” The mission of the church is directly tied to the timeline of history.
Jesus also warned that many would be deceived. False messiahs and false prophets would appear, performing signs and wonders to lead people astray.
The Rebirth of Israel
Many Bible teachers point to the restoration of Israel as a nation in 1948 as a significant prophetic event. Jesus used the metaphor of a fig tree budding to describe the generation that would see these things come to pass in Matthew 24:32-34.
While interpretations vary, the return of the Jewish people to their homeland after two thousand years is seen by many as a key marker in biblical prophecy. Ezekiel 37 and other Old Testament passages foretold this restoration.
Moral and Spiritual Decline
Paul warned Timothy that in the last days, people would be “lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good” (2 Timothy 3:2-3). Sound familiar?
The increase of lawlessness and the cooling of love among many believers are also signs Jesus mentioned in Matthew 24:12.
Why Doesn’t God Just Tell Us the Date?
If God knows the date, why keep it hidden? The answer reveals something important about His heart and His purposes.
Mystery Produces Readiness
If Jesus had said, “I’m coming back on March 15, 2087,” how would the church have lived in the centuries before that date? Likely with complacency, compromise, and little urgency.
The uncertainty is intentional. It keeps every generation of believers on alert, living as though today could be the day.
Luke 12:40 says, “You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” Readiness is the point, not prediction.
God’s Patience With the Lost
2 Peter 3:9 gives us a beautiful reason for the delay: “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
Every day that passes is another day for someone to turn to Christ. God’s apparent delay is actually mercy in action.
What Should We Do While We Wait?
Waiting for Christ’s return is not passive. Scripture calls us to live with both urgency and faithfulness, holding eternity in view while serving faithfully in the present.
Stay Spiritually Awake
Jesus used the word “watch” repeatedly when speaking of His return. Spiritual sleepiness is one of the greatest dangers facing believers.
In Mark 13:35-37, Jesus warns, “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back… What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!'” This means keeping your heart sensitive to sin, your mind filled with Scripture, and your eyes on eternal things.
Are you spiritually awake, or have you drifted into spiritual autopilot?
Live With Holiness and Purpose
Peter connects the return of Christ directly to how we live. In 2 Peter 3:11-12, he writes, “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming.”
Holiness is not optional for those who claim to be waiting for Jesus. The expectation of His return should make us more, not less, committed to purity and obedience.
Share the Gospel Urgently
If Jesus could return at any moment, then every conversation matters. Every relationship is an opportunity.
Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:20, “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us.” The mission hasn’t changed, and the clock is still ticking.
Who in your life needs to hear about Jesus before it’s too late?
Encourage One Another
The writer of Hebrews says, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Isolation is dangerous in the last days. Believers need each other to stay strong, faithful, and hopeful.
What Will Happen When He Returns?
The second coming of Jesus will be the most dramatic and glorious event in human history. Scripture gives us a clear picture of what will happen.
He Will Come Visibly and Powerfully
Revelation 1:7 says, “Look, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him; and all peoples on earth will mourn because of him.” His return will not be quiet or hidden.
Jesus will come as King and Judge, not as a suffering servant. Revelation 19:11-16 describes Him riding a white horse, wearing many crowns, with armies of heaven following Him.
The Dead Will Rise
At the sound of the trumpet, believers who have died will be raised to life with glorified bodies. Paul describes this in 1 Corinthians 15:52-53: “In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet… the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.”
Death will be defeated once and for all. Graves will be emptied, and the faithful will be reunited.
Believers Will Be Gathered
Those who are alive when Jesus returns will be caught up to meet Him in the air. This is often called the Rapture, though the word itself doesn’t appear in Scripture.
1 Thessalonians 4:17 says, “After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.”
Judgment Will Come
Jesus will judge the living and the dead. Believers will stand before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account of their lives and receive rewards (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Those who rejected Christ will face the Great White Throne judgment described in Revelation 20:11-15, where they will be separated from God forever. The stakes could not be higher.
A New Heaven and New Earth
After the final judgment, God will create a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells. Revelation 21:3-4 paints the picture: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.'”
This is the hope we carry. Not escape from reality, but the restoration of all things.
Don’t Be Fooled by False Predictions
Throughout history, many people have claimed to know the date of Christ’s return. Every single one of them has been wrong.
History Is Littered With Failed Predictions
From the Millerites in the 1840s to Harold Camping in 2011, date-setters have embarrassed the church and confused the world. Each time a date passes without Jesus returning, skeptics grow bolder and believers grow weaker.
Jesus couldn’t have been clearer: “No one knows about that day or hour” (Matthew 24:36). Anyone who claims otherwise is either deceived or deceiving.
Focus on Faithfulness, Not Speculation
Some Christians spend more time studying end-times charts than they do sharing the gospel or serving the poor. That’s backward.
Paul warned against those who are “always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). Speculation can become a distraction from obedience.
The Blessed Hope
Paul calls the return of Christ “the blessed hope” in Titus 2:13. It’s not a source of fear for believers, but of comfort, motivation, and joy.
Hope That Anchors the Soul
When life is hard, when the world feels out of control, when grief and suffering press in, the return of Christ is the anchor that holds. Hebrews 6:19 calls this hope “an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
Jesus is coming back to make all things new. That truth changes how we face today.
A Motivation for Holiness
John writes, “Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure” (1 John 3:2-3).
The hope of seeing Jesus face to face should make us want to live lives that honor Him now.
Are You Ready?
The most important question is not “when” but “are you ready?” If Jesus returned today, would you be ready to meet Him?
Examine Your Heart
Have you truly placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Do you know Him personally, or do you just know about Him?
2 Corinthians 13:5 says, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves.” This is not a question to take lightly.
Repent and Believe
If you’ve been living in sin, in compromise, or in spiritual apathy, today is the day to repent. Turn back to God with your whole heart.
Romans 10:9 promises, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Salvation is available right now.
Live Like He’s Coming Today
What would change in your life if you knew Jesus was returning tomorrow? Your prayer life? Your relationships? Your priorities?
Don’t wait for a sign. Live with readiness starting now.
The return of Jesus Christ is the ultimate reality that every person will face. No one knows the day or the hour, but we know it’s coming. We know the signs to watch for, the posture to take, and the mission to carry out while we wait. The question is not whether He will return, but whether you will be ready when He does. Let that truth shape every decision, every conversation, and every day you have left. Stay awake, stay faithful, and keep your eyes on the sky.
