Where Is God In All This?

Thus says the Lord,
“Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool.
Where then is a house you could build for Me?
And where is a place that I may rest?
2 For My hand made all these things,
Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.
“But to this one I will look,
To him who is humble and contrite of spirit,
and who trembles at My word.
Isaiah 66:1-2

Before God rebukes Israel of their sin, He reminds them where and who He is. I think it’s important to be reminded too!

This came to me as I was preparing a lesson for my Sunday school class in Acts 7 while Stephen was before the Sanhedrin he cited this passage to point out their error in limiting God to a temple made with hands Acts 7:49-50.

I think at this point we should picture God (if that’s even possible) sitting on His throne with His feet resting on the earth!

God says!

  1. Heaven is My throne. (His great Majesty and Glory in heaven)
  2. Earth is My footstool. (Adonai- He is the sovereign Lord! In control of all things, having made all things with His hands.) Psalms 115:3
  3. Where is this house you could build for Me? (With your hands, you are going to try to contain Me, the sovereign, Omnipotent [all Powerful], Omniscient [All Knowing] and Omnipresent [All Present] God of glory!
  4. Where is My resting place? I’ll show you a sufficient and acceptable resting place for Me. But to this one I will look!

What one?

Solomon had wise words for us in 1 Kings “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built.” 1 Kings 8:27

God has made the heaven and earth and all that is in them. He’s not impressed with great temples, cathedrals and massive mega churches. No not at all. But I’ll tell you who He looks favorable upon.

But to this one I will look!

What one Lord?

To him who is humble and contrite of spirit,
and who trembles at My word
.

It’s the person who is aware of their spiritual need, who is humble before the Lord. Who shows sorrow for their sin with a repentant spirit and who trembles at the word of God.

Where is God in all this?

He’s with you if you know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord!

Where is His resting place beloved?

It’s with you!

…and that’s a beautiful thing!
