Marinating in the Word of God

I was thinking about those steaks I spoke of in yesterdays post. I mentioned that I let them marinate with olive oil and salt. I couldn’t help but think that’s what the word of God does to us, it gets deep into our beings. When the richness of God’s word is always on our minds and at the tip of our tongues to share with people it’s a beautiful thing!

Paul says it so clearly in Colossians 3 let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, that’s being marinated by the word of God!

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

Colossians 3:15-17 [Emphasis Mine]

The Psalmist writes in Psalm 1…

How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night.

Psalm 1:1, 2 [Emphasis Mine]

I believe David knew it was his responsibility to let the truth dwell in him. We read in Psalm 1 that there is a clear distinction between believers and the world. As we learned yesterday we are to be distinct from the world as Salt & Light.

We read in Psalm 1:2 Davids delight is in the law of the LORD. When LORD is in all capitals its (Yahweh), the proper name of the one true God. Please don’t miss this point, when David uses this word for God, he is implying a personal relationship with the one true God!

Yahweh's Name identifies His People | Names of god, Jehovah ...

If not for the word of God being marinated in us, how can we have this same personal relationship with God and His Word?

Paul writes this in Romans 12…

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Romans 12:2 [Emphasis Mine]

We can only renew our minds if our delight is in the law of the LORD (The Word of God), And in His law he (Us) meditates day and night, reading it, rereading it, studying it, and sharing what we have learned with others.

Back to Paul and Colossians 3 for a moment. when he writes “Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you.” The word dwell ( enoikeō) is an interesting word it means to live in or to be at home It’s like the Word of God take up residence in our hearts and mind.

I think when we are marinated in the word of God it will fill every aspect of our lives, taking over our thoughts, our words and our deeds. It’s easy to see what it produces. Look at the rest of Colossians 3:16, 17…

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.

We have a great responsibility to teach each other, we counsel and warn each other with our hearts filled with thankfulness to God. We want people to see us calling on His Son (Jesus’) name, and not being ashamed to say we are Christians.

Can we say as the psalmist says in Psalm 119:97?

“O how I love Your law! (The Word of God)
It is my meditation all the day.

…and that’s a beautiful thing!
