The Providence of God

My wife and I have traveled to Rhode Island many times in the past going through the city of Providence. I have to tell you every year that we traveled through Providence, I would think of the Providence of God, how can you not!

When does the word Providence ever come up in our daily conversations, except in theology or with the city of Providence. There has to be a connection with the doctrine of Providence and the city of Providence.

Who names a city Providence?

Me being me, I dug a little deeper and according to Encyclopedia Britannica…

Providence R. I. was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, who had been banished from Massachusetts Bay colony for his unorthodox religious beliefs. Williams and five dissenter companions, after canoeing along the Moshassuck River to what is now called College Hill, found a freshwater spring. From the Narragansett Indian sachems Canonicus and Miantonomi he purchased the surrounding land which he named for “God’s merciful providence.”

Encyclopedia Britannica

Who names a city Providence, if not from God?

So I went even deeper!

“It’s God’s activity throughout history in providing for the needs of human beings, especially those who believe in him.”

Tyndale Bible dictionary

I don’t know if Roger Williams was a true believer in Jesus Christ, my guess is yes after reading about his life. I do know things like this are not coincidences! Nothing happens by luck or chance, not anything!

Isaiah 46…

“Remember the former things long past,
For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me,

10 Declaring the end from the beginning,
And from ancient times things which have not been done,
Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,
And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’;

11 Calling a bird of prey from the east,
The man of My purpose from a far country.
Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass.
I have planned it, surely I will do it

Isaiah 46:9-11 [Emphasis Mine]

God’s Providence rules and controls all things. Though we might not understand what He has planned for us during this Covid 19 quarantine, we can be assured He’s in control. Our response is to lift our hands in Awe of Him and say as Paul said in that wonderful doxology in Romans 11…..

Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, OR WHO BECAME HIS COUNSELOR? 35 Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN? 36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

Romans 11:33-36

J.I. Packer said…

“The providence of God is the unceasing activity of the Creator whereby, in overflowing bounty and goodwill, He upholds His creatures in ordered existence, guides and governs all events, circumstances, and free acts of angels and men, and directs everything to its appointed goal, for His own glory.”

The New Bible Dictionary

Let us pay close attention to Jesus’ words….

“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32 “For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Matthew 6:31-34

God is our provider!

He is Yahweh Yireh
The Lord Will Provide

…and that’s a beautiful thing!

  • I read recently that the face of the statue is based on baseball slugger Ted Williams,
    since nobody knows what Roger Williams looked like.
