Love Rejoices With the Truth

We talked last time that we don’t rejoice when someone walks in sin. Paul follows that with, we do rejoice when they walk in truth. The truth only found in the word of God.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8…

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.

Instead of rejoicing when someone sins, love rejoices when someone obeys the truth in the Word of God. When someone walks worthy of the gospel of Jesus Christ. As one writer said, “truth should not be limited to just the gospel, but to the truth found only in the word of God.

Because that’s what’s best for them, and that’s what love is. Love is the truth! Barclay writes “Christian love has no wish to veil the truth; it is brave enough to face the truth; it has nothing to conceal and so is glad when the truth prevails.

With what is going on in our world and culture today, the mass movements and ideologies. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 10…

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,

2 Corinthians 10:5 [Emphasis Mine]

We as teachers of the word of God, need to proclaim the truth, we need not play patty cakes with doctrine, theology, and the word of God, there is too much at stake. We need to go deeper into our studies and sermons.

We need to speak the truth in love because of false teachers with all their windy doctrines and tricks. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard a brother or sister in Christ say, “I love her new book, or isn’t he so uplifting when he speaks…oh but I was saved by their ministry!

No, you were saved by the Spirit of God.

Jesus said…

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who it was that would betray Him. 65 And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.

John 6:63-65 [Emphasis Mine]

Listen to Paul in Ephesians 4…

As a result, we are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming; 15 but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ,

Ephesians 4:14-15 [Emphasis Mine]

We need to go slow with the word of God, slow as fast as we can! We can’t be in a hurry, we need to dig deep in the word of God. We never compromise the truth, we never gag or edit God. Paul says in Acts 20…

“Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. 27 “For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God.

Acts 20:26-30

Love doesn’t tolerate false doctrine. Paul repeatedly warns us about false teachers and the erroneous doctrine they preach.

~Archibald Alexander Hodge Quote

Listed below is just a few from Paul, but John, Peter, and Jesus all warned us about false teachers and bad doctrine creeping into our churches and lives.

1 Timothy 6:3-5, 1 Timothy 6:20-21, Jude 1:3-4
1 Timothy 1:3, Colossians 2:8, Ephesians 5:11

2 Timothy 4:3-4, 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, Acts 20:28-30

Compromising the truth is not showing love. Love is always kind, always patient, but never compromising!

The true Christian was intended by Christ to prove all things by the Word of God, all churches, all ministers, all teaching, all preaching, all doctrines, all sermons, all writings, all opinions, all practices. These are his marching orders. Prove all by the Word of God; measure all by the measure of the Bible; compare all with the standard of the Bible; weigh all in the balances of the Bible; examine all by the light of the Bible; test all in the crucible of the Bible. That which cannot abide the fire of the Bible, reject, refuse, repudiate, and cast away. This is the flag which he nailed to the mast. May it never be lowered!

John Wycliffe [Emphasis Mine]

Love, truth, and righteousness are inseparable.
Love rejoices in the truth!

  • “Compromising the truth is not showing love. Love is always kind, always patient, but never compromising!”

That is it in a nutshell!

Biblical truth and genuine love (all the points in 1 Cor. 13:4-8) are bound together for the saving of souls and upholding the name of God. Compromising biblical truth on the other hand, does neither, it blasphemes the name of God and drops souls through the net of salvation into hell, along with the compromiser.

Sometimes it may seem easier to compromise than offend, regardless, we all, myself included, need to present what is sometimes painful, uncompromising biblical truth with gentle, kind, but firm love.

    Thanks for the reminder.
